Recipe Name: "Dark Sleep Stout", The New Complete Joy of Home Brewing
Ingredients:
6.5 pounds John Bull plain dark malt extract
1 pound dark dried malt extract
1/2 pound roasted barley
1/2 pound black patent malt
1/2 pound crystal malt
2 oz Norther Brewer whole hops
1 cup light dried malt extract (bottling)
Starting specific gravity: 1.055
Ending specific gravity: 1.023
Estimated percent alcohol: 4.2% by volume
Comments:
Dark black beer, with a slightly redish-brown head.
Head is a little thin and rather short-lived.
Nice coffee and burnt aroma. Good start, but the finish is a little weak.
Could have used more hop flavors to balance it out.
Flavors have definitely improved since first bottle was sampled five days ago.
Alcohol content a little lower then expected.
Grade: C+
